Rondo Energy, invested by Bill Gates, will build the world's largest thermal battery factory in Thailand, which is 2.5 times the size of Tesla's Gigafactory.
Rondo Energy, invested by Bill Gates, will build the world's largest thermal battery factory in Thailand, which is 2.5 times the size of Tesla's Gigafactory. The plant is currently capable of producing 2.4 GWh of industrial thermal batteries, with plans to expand to a capacity of 90 GWh.
Thermal batteries convert intermittent wind and solar energy into the sustained high-temperature and low-cost thermal energy required by industry. The company said that using the batteries produced by Rondo, it can make full use of solar and wind energy to achieve a lower cost than fossil fuels to provide continuous zero-carbon industrial heat.
Rondo plans to have a battery production capacity of 90 GWh, which is expected to reduce 12 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, equivalent to taking more than 4 million gas vehicles off the road each year.
Residential storage a growing niche in France
According to SolarPower Europe, the number of battery energy storage systems (BESS) installed in European residential buildings will grow from 650,000 in 2021 to more than 1 million in 2022. This increase is mainly due to the impact of rising energy prices since the new energy revolution, as well as the impact of the war in Ukraine. According to the solar trade group, the number of European households with battery and solar installations is expected to double to 3.5 million by 2026. The growth of this market is mainly driven by five countries including Germany, Italy, Austria, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, but the development of France is still relatively lagging behind. Lars Brinkmeyer, sales manager of German battery manufacturer Kostal International, told French PV magazine that France is still a niche market compared to other countries.
137MW/548MW! TÜV Rheinland is about to open and operate a battery energy storage project in California
According to foreign media reports, a 137MW/548MWh battery energy storage system deployed by the German Rheinland Group in the United States is about to start commercial operation. The battery energy storage system will be deployed in conjunction with a 150MW solar farm under construction, which is expected to be completed in August this year. The project was initiated by the clean energy division of the E.On Group and was later handed over to the Rheinland Group. The project will be connected to the grid operated by CAISO through PG&E's substations, support local biodiversity, and contribute tax revenue and employment to the local area. RWE is also developing other solar-plus-storage projects in the US.
The development of global photovoltaics exceeds expectations! 2023 is expected to add 341GW of new photovoltaic installed capacity
At Intersolar Europe in Munich, Germany, SolarPower Europe released the latest version of the global photovoltaic market outlook for 2023-2027.
According to the report data of SolarPower Europe, in 2022, the newly installed photovoltaic capacity in the world will be 239GW, a year-on-year increase of 45%, of which photovoltaics will account for 66%. In 2022, photovoltaic power generation will account for 4.5% of global electricity production, and the growth rate is higher than that of other renewable energy sources. Solar and wind power generation growth rates were 24% and 16%, respectively, with the surge in photovoltaic development mainly affected by the end of COVID-19 and the global energy crisis. The countries with the most newly installed photovoltaic capacity in the world are China, the United States, India, Brazil, etc., and China is still the world's largest photovoltaic market.
China's energy storage market is about to overtake Europe and the United States
According to a TrendForce report released by TrendForce, the cumulative installed capacity of renewable energy in the world will be approximately 3,064GW in 2021, with wind energy and photovoltaics accounting for 88%. In 2021, the global energy storage market will maintain a high growth trend, with a new installed capacity of 29.6 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 72.4%. It is estimated that the global energy storage market will usher in rapid development in the next 5-10 years, and the newly installed capacity of global energy storage will be about 362 GWh by 2025. China predicts that by 2025, the energy storage market will break through 100GWh, which will overtake Europe and the United States. The main growth force will come from the power generation side. The newly installed capacity in the United States will reach 136GWh in 2025, and the newly installed capacity in Europe will reach 54GWh in 2025.
Spain: 76GW PV in 2030!
Spain's Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITECO) has updated its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), increasing its solar PV target to 76GW by 2030.
The new draft has been brought to the public consultation stage with a deadline of September 4, 2023, almost doubling the previously set PV installed capacity of 39GW. From the updated 76GW target, 19GW will come from self-use capacity. Spain is committed to achieving a total installed capacity target of 214 GW in 2030.
By the end of 2022, the total installed solar photovoltaic capacity in Spain will be close to 20GW, adding nearly 3.7GW of ground-mounted photovoltaic installed capacity in 2022 alone.
